For My Son

There’s stillness in the house now.
It was there before, but I had tricked my mind into
Believing it was only temporary.
My eyes are fully open now—this is my new reality.
Longing to see your black car in our driveway, yet
Knowing the cement will be vacant.
Your new life has begun.
Memories rush through my mind
Pictures, videos, flying like autumn leaves.
Rustling images, Imax quality, 3D vision, surround sound,
Filaments of days, years that passed quickly by.
I long to hold you in my arms,
Run my fingers through your buzzed hair
Kiss your bearded cheek.
You have entered a new rite of passage.
How could eighteen years
Sweep through our lives like
Fluttering wings of butterflies?
My boy is now a man.
I will love you always my boy,
My man,
My son.
There is stillness, but not in
My heart.

We took my son to college over the weekend. Even though his commute time is small, and he will be home on weekends...it's not the same. It's harder than I thought it would be.

This is a beautiful and such a loving post, I have no idea how almost 8 years has flown by in my own life...grateful for every minute even the pain, more grateful for the joys of which you share here eloquently and lovingly.
To have a mom like you, that is the truest gift!!!

We love them so deeply and they grow so quickly. So many changes...many of them difficult to adjust to. But we do......eventually.

God bless.

I ask where did the time go, when maybe there was no such thing as time.

Tomorrow I visit my great grandson, age ONE. In a minute he will be age 150, and he will be saying, Where did the time go?

You will see your son frequently, as you give him space to grow, to live. And he will know that there is always a place for him--called HOME!

thank you all for your warm comments. it's been 6 years since my daughter left for college--4 hours away--and she now lives 8 hours from home. i don't know why i thought it would be easier to watch my son settle into his dorm.

Steve you're right, they both will always have a place they can call HOME.

warm smiles and hugs to all,
j

Oh my dear friend,
This sweet words of love, sorry, L O V E, have brought tears to my eyes... It's true years fly and the time to say goodbye... I need to hold on this time I still have him by my side, but this is something we must know from the day they are born. They do not belong to us, but to themselves... and they become what we have already, adults (easier said than done... i know!)

BEAUTIFUL post Jessie dear!

Oh you spoke for all of us it seems, our hearts are being tugged while reading this beautiful tribute to your son. Thing of it this way, the next passage is perhaps marriage and then grand children ,how divine.

Hi Jessie...I totally can relate to these words. My eldest whom is now 23 left home at 19 & although it wasn't too far away from home.. it felt like it was miles away. But just like a boomerang he came back home about year ago when the recession hit & rental prices sky rocketed.
It's good to have him home for now...but I know the time will come when each of my three boys will fly the coup.
